Wondering, “How old do you have to be to go karting?” There is no universal minimum age, as requirements vary between venues and kart types. Age isn’t the only factor, either. Your height and, for higher-performance karts, previous driving experience can determine what you can drive. At Picton Karting Track (PKT), we have karts for everyone from young beginners to experienced racers ready for serious two-stroke performance.
What is the minimum age for go karting?
The minimum age for go karting depends on the kart and venue. At PKT, kids can get behind the wheel of Mini Karts from age four, while our 7HP Junior Karts are designed for drivers aged 7–13 who meet the height requirement.
So, can children go go-karting? Absolutely. The key is matching young drivers with machinery designed for their age and ability.
Adult go karting age requirements also vary with the kart’s power. At PKT, drivers can step up to 13HP karts from age 14, while our 18HP and 23HP adult karts are available from age 17, subject to the applicable requirements.
Are there height requirements for go karting?
Meeting the go karting age limit doesn’t necessarily mean you’re ready for every kart. Go karting height requirements help determine whether a driver can properly reach and operate the steering wheel and pedals.
PKT Junior Kart drivers must be over 1 metre tall. Our 13HP, 18HP and 23HP adult karts require drivers to be over 1.4 metres tall.
Always check the requirements for your chosen kart before booking, particularly if a younger driver is close to the minimum height.
Do you need experience to go karting?
Beginners don’t need to worry since you don’t necessarily need previous experience for go karting at PKT. PKT’s 7HP Junior Karts have a low experience requirement, while the 13HP karts suit drivers ready to build their skills with more power.
As you move up the range, experience becomes more important. The 18HP karts are rated medium-high for experience, while our two-stroke machines are reserved for skilled drivers.
The 15HP Mini Max requires junior racers to qualify before driving. To qualify for the 23HP RMAX, drivers must first complete two races in the 18HP karts. It’s a progression that rewards developing your control before stepping into serious racing machinery.
Can children and adults go go-karting together?
Want to turn karting into a family race day? Drivers aged 14+ can race alongside adults in PKT’s 13HP karts. For younger children, families can book an appropriate family session or share the experience in a Twin Kart.
Our 13HP Twin Kart requires the driver to be at least 18 years old and over 1.4 metres tall, while passengers can be aged four and above, subject to conditions.
