How To Improve Your Lap Times
October 27, 2026
When it comes to outdoor go-karting, practice makes perfect! The more time you spend on the track, the more experience you gain. But improving your lap times isn’t just about driving faster; it’s about driving smarter.
Picton Karting Track is located in the prime position just south of Sydney providing the perfect track for Kart enthusiasts.
For beginners to hard core karting enthusiasts, we have put together five tips to help you sharpen your skills, maintain your momentum and shave those precious seconds off your next lap!
1. Master Your Racing Line
Your racing line can make a significant difference to your lap times. When approaching a corner, aim to enter from the outside, move towards the inside apex (the tightest point of the corner), and allow your kart to move back towards the outside on the exit. This creates a smoother line, helping you maintain momentum and carry more speed through the corner. Remember to adjust your approach to suit the weather and track conditions.
2. Maintain Your Momentum
Learning when to slow down and accelerate is key to improving your lap times. Approaching corners at a manageable speed before accelerating smoothly on the exit. Avoid unnecessary braking or sudden movements, as these can reduce your speed and cost you valuable seconds. Petrol karts can take time to regain their revs, so maintaining momentum wherever possible is important.
3. Keep Your Steering Smooth
Jerky steering movements can unsettle your kart, reduce grip and cause you to lose momentum. Instead, focus on smooth, controlled movements through each corner. Keeping your hands balanced on the steering wheel, around the 9 and 3 o’clock positions, can help you maintain control and steer confidently. Remember, fast driving isn’t about making the biggest movements; it’s about making the right movements at the right time!
4. Get Comfortable in Your Seat
Your driving position can influence how comfortably and consistently you control your kart. Sit upright with your back against the seat and your body centred. Avoid hunching forward or leaning excessively from side to side. A stable position helps you maintain control of the steering wheel and respond more consistently to corners.
5. Know Your Track and Practice
The more familiar you become with the track, the better you’ll understand your racing line, braking points and acceleration zones. Pay attention to where you can improve and focus on one skill at a time. Keep track of your lap times, set realistic goals and challenge yourself to improve with every session. Small improvements in technique can make a big difference over time!
